Residential Treatment Center (RTC) Program: Recreation Worker Job Summary*
- St. Christopher’s Recreation Workers are responsible for organizing, encouraging participation in, and conducting—in an orderly and safe way—recreational activities for campus residents—including arts and crafts, sports, games, social events and recreational trips—taking into account the needs and interests of both individual residents and groups.
- Recreation workers: accompany residents on recreational and educational trips to ensure their safety and well-being and monitor behavior; administer first aid according to prescribed procedures and notify the campus infirmary and emergency medical personnel as necessary; and meet with the program coordinator to discuss needs for equipment and materials and address residents' comments and complaints regarding recreational activities.
- Job requirements include knowledge of: New York State regulations and Agency policies and procedures concerning the provision of recreational services; and recreational program design, including appropriate arts, crafts, sports, games and hobbies, instructional methods, and safety practices. A familiarity with individual treatment goals and recreational needs of residents is also necessary.
- Also required is the ability to: implement an age-appropriate range of recreational activities for the resident population; gauge skill levels of residents and provide individualized instruction; communicate instructions to residents in a clear and concise manner; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, cottage staff, and residents.
- A High School Diploma is required, while an Associates Degree or two years of college in a related field is desirable. A minimum of one year of experience in developing and conducting recreational programs for adolescents is also required, as is the ability to obtain and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training certification, CPR and first aid certifications, and a valid driver’s license.
