Job Title: Teacher Assistant

Department: ORR Residential Shelter Program

Location: New Windsor, NY

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $42,000-$43,680

 

I. JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Assistant Program Director and ORR teachers, the teacher aide provides support in the classroom ensuring a safe and stimulating educational environment. He/she assists the teacher in preparing lesson outlines, plans, and curricula in assigned areas. As a hybrid role, this position also functions as a Youth Care Counselor prior to school hours or during school holidays. These responsibilities include helping with the morning routine, activities of daily living, and/or transition to school.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A. Assist in the implementation of curriculum for each child according to their developmental needs, academic and literacy level. Lessons are in their native language, but youth are provided opportunities to learn English.

B. Review material taught in class with individual students with learning challenges or work with small groups of students for remedial teaching or to reinforce the learning process.

C. Help create and facilitate educational activities in the community as well as hands-on projects for the residences, that will enhance the lesson plans provided.

D. Will maintain individualized educational case files and enters relevant information into a designated ORR database in accordance with policies and procedures.

E. Works with ORR and other governing bodies to ensure that the academic program is meeting all standards.

F. Will maintain inventory of all educational supplies and ensure that the education program is fully equipped to meet the needs of the youth supported by the program.

G. Help students adjust, learn, and socialize.

H. Effectively builds relationships with other team members in order to assist with information sharing and service provision. 

I. Attends staff meetings, school programs, and in-service trainings as required.

III. RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Provide supervision during assigned shift including helping youth to perform all activities of daily living; including self-care, chores, etc. when needed.

B. Initiate, support, and escort residents to school, to planned recreation and/or other therapeutic educational activities.

C. Will utilize the appropriate techniques of behavior management and conflict resolution as taught, whether in the residence or classroom setting. This includes providing timely written documentation and oral communication of significant events when necessary

D. Other duties as assigned by the teacher/s or ORR administrators.

IV. JOB REQUIREMENTS

A. Knowledge:

• General knowledge of ORR regulations regarding the operation of a Residential Shelter for Unaccompanied Children educational program.

• Thorough knowledge of relevant Agency policies and procedures.

• Excellent writing, speaking and presentation skills.

B. Physical Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to sit and use a personal computer for extended periods.

• Ability to access all program locations and to climb stairs.

• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

C. Mental Skills and Abilities:

• Bilingual in Spanish and have excellent bilingual oral and written communication skills.

• Familiarity with school administrative tasks and learning methods.

• Ability to develop and maintain required written program documentation in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

• Ability to establish and maintain positive rapport and effective working relationships with the youth and the ORR team of providers and administrators.

• Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict mediation skills, and the ability to effectively supervise and handle crisis situations.

• Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices for working with traumatized/exploited children.

D. Working Environment:

• General office setting. 

• This is a full-time position. Services will generally be delivered during the morning hours; 7am-3pm or 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday.

E. Education/Experience:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (e.g., education, behavioral science, human services, or social services).

• At least two years of relevant experience. An Associate degree may be considered depending on years of direct service delivery experience in a classroom setting.

F. Licenses / Certifications:

• You possess or will be able to obtain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention certification.

• You possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.
